In the mid and late 1980s, football fanatics of the West African nation of Ghana trooped always into the various stadia in the former British Colony just to watch an amazing African Legend on the green turf who later also produced fantastic footballers as children. This legend’s name is still the most mentioned when you speak with most football lovers who grew up around the late 80s and early 90s in Ghana, all because of what he achieved personally on the pitch and the influence and impact he has made in Ghanaian football history.

Abedi Pele’s rise to fame began in his native country as he was playing for one of the most respected teams at the time. Real Tamale United (RTU) was the club at the time where almost all players who hailed from the northern parts of Ghana one way or the other got involved with, Abedi Ayew went on to become one of Africa’s greatest players on the world stage as he is still revered today among many football sympathizers in the world especially in Africa and Europe.

Unfortunately for the technical carbon-copy of the great legend, this young one didn’t have the opportunity to taste the warm reception of the Kalanda Park in Tamale where Abedi Pele played most of his home games whiles playing locally for RTU, because, he took a different path for his development as a professional footballer which is the academy system. He was born in Bolgatanga, a smaller city in Ghana which serves as the capital of the Upper East Region and lies at the north-eastern part of Ghana but exactly 41.5 kilometers from Paga the hometown of the Legend Abedi Ayew Pele.

The young Ghanaian player whom many German Bundesliga and French Ligue 1 teams feared, bears almost the same qualities of the legendary Abedi Pele and these words are direct quotations from old Ghanaian football fans both home and abroad who happened to see the three (3) times African Footballer of Year whiles he was playing for Olympic Marseille and the Black Stars. Quote from one Ghanaian football fan who lives in Berlin told author of this article, “See, whenever I am watching David Atanga play for Furth, he just reminds me of Abedi Pele, he has almost everything of him and that’s refreshing to see a modern Ghanaian player bring back the memories of the legend on German soil”. Another quote from a 70-year old former civil engineer who lives in Accra but visited his children in Austria in June  said, “ This is the modern-day Abedi Pele”, after watching Atanga play for St. Polten in the Austrian Bundesliga last season and these comments are not surprising to me because this is how he is called back home in Bolgatang, ‘Abedi’.

Atanga started his playing career at a tender age and was recruited by Red Bull Ghana, a sub-company of Red Bull Salzburg based in Austria. He later moved from Red Bull Ghana to Salzburg with two others because of his qualities as a footballer and the ability to adapt to new teachings and techniques. He was given the opportunity to join the Red Bull Salzburg team but couldn’t sign a professional contract because he was not 18 yet, hence he joined the farm team for Salzburg, FC Liefering but got opportunities to train and play some training games with the first team which then had Liverpool and Senegal’s captain Sadio Mane. He later joined the team A after celebrating his eighteenth birthday.

David then began to show the qualities he had as a player in training and gradually became part of the core team that won the 2015/2016 Austria Tipico Bundesliga for Red Bull Salzburg which included Liverpool and Guinea’s playmaker Naby Keita. During that period, he has featured for the Black Satellites, the national U-20 male team for Ghana at the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand where they existed in the second round after losing to distance neighbors Mali.

To not exaggerate the qualities of David Atanga as a player and for the young ones who have not had the opportunity to watch Abedi Pele, just picture a more determined former Manchester City  player Robinho and Juventus winger Douglas Costa combined, with a higher ability to also defend when the team is under pressure and tactically discipline when he doesn’t have the ball. This is the kind of player one will get as a manager or a team if you manage to get the signature of the Ghanaian player who will turn 22 on the 25th December 2019 (Christmas Day).

Before David joined his current team Greuther Furth on loan in the German Bundesliga 2, he had made a strong statement with his talent on the pitch where ever he has been over the past few years in his career as a footballer. From FC Liefering, Salzburg, St.Polten, FC Heidenheim, Mattersburg including the Ghana national Under-17 and Under-20 teams.

Statistically, the 22-year old has done very well in terms of contributions to goals, creating chances, assists and goals scored. He is that kind of player that when you have in your team, the opponent’s defenders find it very difficult especially when the round leather is literally glued to his feet and in the middle of the park or when he takes off from the wings on both sides of the pitch, he is very difficult to catch unless he is fouled.

Atanga at 22,  should be walking onto the pitch on Champions League matchday or Europa League game day or probably be playing for one of the top six teams in Germany, Italy, France, Spain and England, considering the kind of qualities he possessed as a player and the kind of impact he adds to the game whenever he wears a kit to play, whether training session or official match.

As I conclude this short piece on Atanga David Doona, my hope and believe is that, the managers of the top six teams across the countries I mentioned in the previous paragraph will give this little African gem a look-in as Olympic Marseille did for the legend Abedi Ayew Pele to explore the full potential of this talent from Bolgatanga.

Julian Selby is a Ghanaian artist who has had a long time to practice his stunning pencil art; he’s been at it since primary in school.

He is one of Ghana’s rare talents making waves in the art industry.

Growing up, he said he inspired his love of drawing, and he expresses himself through the creative art industry.

He has quickly earned a name for himself with his unique style of drawing that blends photorealism and surrealism on a massive scale called Artwork by Pimpin.

His work has the look of vintage photography, but usually with an unsettling or incongruous twist.

Artwork by Pimpin pencil drawings are amazing to look at, but he regards his hyper-real work as just a stage in his ongoing evolutionary process of exploration and development.

Over a period of roughly two years, Artwork by Pimpin drew his intricate piece, which we still – no matter how long we look at it – cannot believe is a drawing.

Lots of artists do not go in for degrees, he said, but talent, as well as knowledge, is necessary.

In an interview, he said people are willing to pay for stuff that is creative and new.

“His works are, in my opinion, very hard to compete with,” he added.

Here are some pencil drawings by Pimpin:

Pictures released by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on Wednesday suggest that the Accra Sports Stadium is being put in shape for the 2018 African Women’s Championships.

The tournament will run from November 17 to December 1 and Accra and Cape Coast will host the 8 participating countries.

The Accra Stadium has been undergoing some renovation works for some months now and it seems that some work is going into making the ground ready for the event.

The floodlights and the pitch seem to have experienced a face-lift.

However, there is some way to go before it can take care of some of the continent’s high profile matches in terms of women’s football as the seats and the scoreboard need some attention.

Will Ghana even host the tournament?

Ghana’s status as hosts came under fire in the last few weeks ago after news reports emerged that the Confederation of African Football was looking for a new host due to the slow nature of renovation works on the Accra Stadium.

The Chairman of the LOC for the tournament, Madam Freda Prempeh, said that CAF had not stated anything of that sort and CAF itself said that no official decision had been taken with regard to Ghana’s hosting of the event.

CAF added that a decision on Ghana would be announced on September 28 during its Executive Committee meeting in Cairo, Egypt.

Ghanaian midfielder Kingsley Sarfo has appealed his prison sentence at the Supreme Court in Sweden.

The former Malmo FF player was charged for twice raping a fourteen-year-old girl and was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

His lawyer is arguing his sentence for sexual exploitation and not rape.

Sarfo admitted he had sex with the girl and there was saved communication between the two where the girl said she had just turned 14 years called Sarfo “daddy”.

“The profession is clear that the Supreme Court will grant a trial and that they should deny the prosecution in its entirety,” Sarfo’s lawyer Mikael Sundman said.

Anthony Joshua defended his world heavyweight titles with a devastating knockout of Alexander Povetkin after overcoming an early onslaught from the Russian at Wembley on Saturday night.

The British-Nigerian star dropped Povetkin with a brutal assault in the seventh round and then floored the WBA mandatory challenger again to signal a sudden and dramatic ending to his title defence.

Joshua keeps hold of the WBA, (Super) IBF, WBO and IBO belts. That’s the first time Povetkin has been stopped in his career as he receives brutal punching from Joshua.

After two slower opening rounds, Joshua found his range in that fight. And it was a series of accurate combinations which did it in the seventh round, first with an overhand right and then some big lefts making that 22 professional wins unbeaten.

Round One

End of the first round. Joshua, wearing white shorts, looked to control the middle of the ring.  But Povetkin, dangerous when he gets up close, looked to close gap to his opponent. The Russian finished strongly with a clever combination as Joshua stumbled slightly.

Round Two

Drama already as that late round one attack from Povetkin, wearing black shorts, looks to have landed a blow on Joshua’s nose and there is blood. Could that impact upon the Briton’s breathing later on? Joshua aims to consolidate in round two but Povetkin lands a right-hander. Povetkin already trying to bring his dangerous left hook into play too. Joshua ends with a couple of jabs.

Round three

Joshua is struggling to settle here against his 39-year-old opponent. Another left from the Russian creeps through. But the Brit finishes the round in better fashion with some clever counter work. Probably about even that round.

Round four

Joshua lands one on Povetkin’s face early in the fourth round as his right-hander makes it through and cuts the Russian’s left eye. More blood in this fight. Povetkin’s tactics are about the power shots. But AJ seems to be finding his range and is moving well around the ring.

Round five

Both fighters appear to have recovered from those early blows to the face. That’s a hard-fought round. When Povetkin gets in close, he looks threatening. Joshua needs to keep an eye on that.

Round six

Many pre-fight predictions were that Povetkin would be very dangerous in the first four to five rounds before perhaps fading. We’re into round six.

The crowd roars as Joshua lands a couple of quick combinations. But another uppercut from Povetkin makes it through the Briton’s defence. Joshua is boxing well and dictating things but the Russian is still a serious threat. All it takes is one shot.

Anthony Joshua wins in round seven by knockout

AJ does it again!  A fierce right-hander has Povetkin stunned. And then Joshua goes in for the kill, unleashing a volley of shots. Povetkin goes down on the canvas, tries to get back up but Joshua lands a killer blow.

The Common Wealth Hall and Volta Hall emerged tops at the 55th University of Ghana Cross Country competition which was held on Friday 21st September 2018 with the ‘Vandalz’ winning the male category and the ‘Ladies’ also going home with the female trophy.

The event which was organized under the auspices of the University of Ghana Sports Directorate saw members of the University’s Sports Advisory Board and other senior officials of the school grace the occasion.

Beatrice Owusuwaa, a second-year student of the Mensah Sarbah Hall was first to the cross the finish line in the female division with a time of 46:01:63secs, Larewncia Naa Adjeley of Volta Hall was second with a time of 51:22:67secs and Cynthia Anyokama Anafo of Akuafo Hall emerged third with 51:57:45secs.

In the male division, a level 100 student of the Common Wealth Hall, Raja Lagble Komla came through with the time of 33 mins 06 micro-seconds to win the first position, Joseph Mensah also of CommonWealth came second with 33:38:27secs whiles Prince Faraj from the same hall placed third with 34:30:83secs to complete an all Common Wealth Hall affair.

In all, Volta Hall emerged as champions of the 2018 Univerisity of Ghana cross-country competition with Mensah Sarbah picking up the second position and Akuafo Hall taking home bronze as the overall third best team in the female division. The ‘Vandalz’ after a fantastic 10 kilometres went back to the’Vandal City’ with gold, followed by the ‘Vikings’ Mensah Sarbah Hall and winning bronze in the male division.

Director at the Univerisity’s Sports Directorate, Dr Bella Bello Bitugi expressed his satisfaction in the organization of this year’s event and the competitiveness of the marathon as it will go a long way to help the school assembly the best of the best to represent the school during the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) cross-country later this year.

” Even though we wish that more halls would have participated, as you can see for your self, the organization was great, participation was great because we started from somewhere and I think we are making progress. There were new winners and new faces showing up in the female division with great performance and I think we are on track” Dr Bello spoke after the event

He further added that, even though the organization was good, one of the halls reported late hence they were not scored as a sign of punishment to deter others from doing same next time.

“We decided not score Legon Hall who reported late and because we as an institution wants to keep discipline among the students, we decided to allow them to participate in the event but not to score them as it’s done always and I hope this will send a good message to others to abide by the time given to them during competitions” Dr Bello added

The 55th University of Ghana cross-country serves as a preparation grounds ahead of the GUSA cross-country which will take place at the University of Professional Studies later this year.
