Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, told Parliament on Tuesday that a recent surge in COVID-19 cases, primarily driven by an outbreak at the University of Ghana.
As of July 1, 2025, 107 cases have been confirmed out of 316 suspected samples, with the Omicron variant identified as the primary cause.
Fortunately, no hospitalizations or deaths have been reported.
The outbreak is attributed to the university’s recent Hall Week celebrations, where large crowds gathered with minimal adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols.
In response, the Ministry of Health has deployed a national response team to work closely with university and municipal health officials to contain the outbreak.
The Ministry of Health has suspended all future hall week activities on campus and sent nationwide alerts to health facilities to remain vigilant.
A campus-wide public education campaign has also been rolled out to reinforce adherence to public health protocols.
The Health Minister is urging the public to maintain proper hand hygiene, wear face masks in crowded areas, and get vaccinated, especially those due for booster shots.
He also advised individuals to avoid gathering if they are sick.
The Ghana Health Service is actively collaborating with university authorities to contain the outbreak and review response measures as the situation evolves. The public is urged to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures to curb further spread of the virus.
