Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has registered his displeasure at the level of examination malpractice witnessed during the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC).
According to him, the provisional results paint a “crazy” picture, with 18.9% of Integrated Science papers and 16.9% of Core Math papers being cancelled or withheld due to alleged collusion.
“This is the worst provisional report on examination malpractice and exam fraud in decades,” Kofi Asare noted in a Facebook post, adding that the trend surpasses last year’s unprecedented malpractice record of 10%.
He also revealed that the malpractice is not limited to a few subjects, with English and Social Studies papers also being affected.
A total of 10.4% of English papers and 3.4% of Social Studies papers were either cancelled or withheld.
The raw count of candidates involved points to about 72,000 for Core Mathematics and over 80,000 for Integrated Science alone.
This statistics, according to the African Education Watch boss, is a clear indication that the problem of examination malpractice is widespread and requires urgent attention.
Kofi Asare warned that if the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by John Dramani Mahama fails to support the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in stamping out examination room collusion, the WASSCE certificate may soon become “mere paper”.
He advocated for the dismissal of culpable teachers, closure of WASSCE tourism schools, and installation of CCTV cameras in all examination centers to address the canker.
