Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has announced additional government funding to support ongoing dredging and the construction of critical drainage systems in flood-prone areas, as part of efforts to reduce the impact of flooding in Accra.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament, Dr. Forson said the government is strengthening its response to the devastating floods that hit parts of the capital earlier this year.
“I am making additional resources available for the ongoing dredging and construction of critical drains in affected areas. The President has directed the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources to design a comprehensive, permanent solution to Accra’s flooding,” he stated.
According to the Finance Minister, the June 29 floods claimed lives, displaced families, destroyed businesses and caused extensive damage to public infrastructure.
“The government responded swiftly by visiting the hardest-hit communities, releasing funds and organising a nationwide clean-up exercise,” he told Parliament.
Dr. Forson further disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has tasked the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources with developing a long-term strategy to tackle flooding not only in Accra but also in other flood-prone communities across the country.
He added that funding for the implementation of the permanent flood control measures will be provided in the 2027 Budget and the government’s medium-term expenditure framework.
The announcement comes in the aftermath of the devastating June 29 floods, which followed hours of torrential rainfall across Accra. The disaster submerged major roads, homes, businesses and vehicles, disrupted economic activities and displaced hundreds of residents, while several people lost their lives in one of the capital’s worst flooding incidents in recent years.
Government officials say the additional investment in drainage infrastructure and the planned long-term flood management strategy are expected to improve resilience and reduce the recurring impact of flooding in Accra and other vulnerable communities.
