Nations FC defender Razak Simpson is on standby to join Ghana’s Black Stars in Wales following an injury setback suffered by experienced centre-back Alexander Djiku ahead of the team’s international friendly against Wales.
Reports indicate that Djiku sustained the injury during a training session, raising concerns over his availability as Ghana finalizes preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars medical team is currently assessing the extent of the injury and exploring options as the deadline for the final squad announcement approaches.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to name his official 26-man squad later today, with the team set to face Wales at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday in a key preparatory fixture.
Should Djiku be ruled out, Simpson is considered one of the leading candidates to step into the squad. The Nations FC defender is coming off an impressive campaign, having captained his side to FA Cup glory with a victory over Dreams FC on Sunday.
The defender is no stranger to the national team setup, having previously featured for the Black Stars and recently played in Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico.
Ghana will be aiming for a strong World Cup campaign after being drawn in Group L. The Black Stars begin their tournament against Panama on June 17 before facing England and Croatia in their remaining group-stage matches.
