South African activist, Jacinta Ngobese Zuma has sparked controversy after commenting on immigration and support from other African countries following South Africa’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In posts shared on social media, Ngobese Zuma argued that South Africa does not need support from neighbouring African countries.
She claimed that such support could later be used to justify illegal immigration into the country.
The activist, who has previously been criticised by opponents for her views on immigration, said the growing number of foreign African nationals in South Africa was taking jobs away from citizens and posing challenges to security and social stability.
Her remarks quickly triggered widespread debate online.
Critics accused her of promoting xenophobic views and warned that such comments could deepen divisions between African nations. Many social media users said her statements risked fuelling hostility towards migrants living in South Africa.
Others, however, defended her position, arguing that concerns about immigration, employment opportunities and public services deserve greater attention from policymakers.
The exchange has once again emphasized the ongoing debate in South Africa over immigration, economic opportunities and the country’s relationship with the wider African continent.
