A 27-year-old driver’s mate has been sentenced to three months in prison after stealing a driver’s mobile phone and cash at the Tema Station in Accra, then exposing himself by posting his own photograph on the victim’s WhatsApp status.
Edem Avenyo was arrested after he allegedly took the driver’s phone, snapped a picture of himself with it and uploaded the image to the owner’s WhatsApp account, alerting the victim and leading to his eventual arrest at his hideout.
Prosecutors told the Gbese District Court that Avenyo also stole an amount of GHc 7,000 during the incident at the busy transport terminal.
Avenyo pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing when he appeared before the court and was convicted on his own plea.
During sentencing, he appealed to the court to temper justice with mercy, promising to work and repay the stolen money and replace the phone.
The court, however, rejected the plea and sentenced him to three months imprisonment.
