The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has started distributing streetlights to all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the region to improve security and safety in communities.
Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo announced that each Metropolitan and Municipal Assembly will receive 150 streetlights, while District Assemblies will get 100 each. She has directed all assemblies to complete installation and submit brief reports to the Regional Coordinating Council by the end of the week.
Mrs. Ocloo said the initiative reflects the President’s long-standing push for safer, well-lit neighbourhoods as part of broader efforts to reduce crime and improve night-time visibility across the region.
Speaking to the media, the Regional Minister also raised concerns about the continued vandalism of public infrastructure, particularly the theft of streetlight cables. She described the practice as unacceptable, stressing that streetlight installation is expensive and places a heavy financial burden on government.
“Installing streetlights is very costly, and we cannot keep investing huge sums only for individuals, acting in their own interest, to steal the cables,” she said.
She appealed to residents to help protect public property by staying alert and reporting vandalism to the authorities. “We will not accept it. Everyone must act as a watchdog so the right action can be taken,” she added.
The streetlight distribution forms part of wider measures aimed at strengthening public safety, improving visibility at night, and supporting crime prevention efforts across the Greater Accra Region.
