63 NPP MPs backing Bawumia is insignificant – Paul Adom-Otchere

Journalist and host of Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV, Paul Adom-Otchere, has described as insignificant the endorsement of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by 63 Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana with Moro Awudu, Adom-Otchere said the support from the MPs should not be overestimated given the size of the NPP’s Electoral College.

“The Electoral College is over 200,000 people. So if you have 63 declaring for you, that is not a reason to be complacent,” he said.

He explained that while the MPs may carry some influence in their constituencies, the actual voting numbers make their endorsement less decisive. “Perhaps every ballot is going to count as one. You are talking about 63 constituencies out of more than 40,000 polling stations. In terms of raw numbers, 63 out of 200,000 is not much,” he noted.

Adom-Otchere added that the influence of the MPs remains to be tested within the party’s internal elections.

“These MPs were voted for as NPP candidates in the last general election, not as candidates in a party primary. So the kind of influence they hold within the primary process is still uncertain,” he said.
