Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to lead the New Patriotic Party has received a major boost as 63 of the party’s Members of Parliament have renewed their commitment to back him ahead of the upcoming presidential primaries.
In a joint statement, the MPs said their decision was based on conviction, citing Dr Bawumia’s leadership record, his role in national development, and his contribution to the NPP over the years.
“We believe Dr Bawumia represents the next chapter of the NPP’s vision, a future built on competence, innovation, unity and hope,” the group said.
The MPs described him as a visionary and diligent leader whose ideas have shaped Ghana’s economic and digital transformation. They credited him with helping modernise public service delivery and promoting financial inclusion through the country’s digitalisation drive.
“From his days as a brilliant economist at the Bank of Ghana to his service as Vice President, Dr Bawumia has shown that leadership is not about words but work, not about entitlement but excellence and delivery,” the statement noted.
According to the legislators, Dr Bawumia’s leadership reflects the founding principles of the NPP, anchored on freedom, democracy and development through enterprise. They likened his qualities to those of the party’s pioneers, including Dr J. B. Danquah, Dr K. A. Busia and Chief S. D. Dombo, describing him as “a leader who respects our history yet reimagines our future.”
The MPs called on NPP delegates across the country to rally behind Dr Bawumia in the primaries, arguing that he is the candidate most capable of uniting the party and securing victory in the 2028 general election.
“To our cherished delegates, this is our moment to make history once again. Let us reward loyalty, humility and hard work with trust,” they urged.
The statement, signed by Mampong MP Kwaku Ampratwum Sarpong, concluded that Dr Bawumia “carries Danquah’s courage, Busia’s intellect and Dombo’s humility and unifying heart,” and that under his leadership, the NPP “will not only win but lead Ghana into a new era of progress, opportunity and national pride.”
