Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has officially withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing Thank You Tour, citing concerns over violence and recent divisive utterances.
Mr. Agyapong made the announcement during an interview with Moro Awudu on Good Morning Ghana on Accra-based Metro TV.
His decision follows an incident involving a student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) who was reportedly stabbed during one of the tour’s events. Although details surrounding the incident remain unclear, the development has raised serious concerns about the safety of the tour.
“I was confident that this tour would help unite the party after the primaries,” Agyapong stated. “But due to some recent utterances and this violent incident, I have decided to step back. I am preaching unity—if not, I would have retaliated.”
The controversial and outspoken politician emphasized that his decision stems from a desire to avoid further division within the NPP and to discourage the growing trend of political intolerance, especially among the youth.
Mr. Agyapong, who placed second in the NPP presidential primaries, has remained an influential voice in the party and among its grassroots supporters.
His withdrawal from the Thank You Tour is expected to stir conversation within the NPP ranks about internal cohesion and the safety of its public engagements.
