A new post-election survey by Africa Policy Lens has revealed that a significant majority of Ghanaians are unhappy with the government’s position on LGBTQ+ issues, raising fresh questions about the political implications ahead of the 2028 general elections.
According to the report, “85% of Ghanaians feel disappointed by the government’s position on LGBTQ+,” signalling widespread public discontent on the controversial subject.
The survey, conducted between April 9 and April 11, 2026, targeted eligible voters across all 16 regions of the country.
Researchers deployed their instrument to approximately 300,000 voters via bulk SMS, with participation remaining voluntary.
“A total of 6,796 responses were received at the close of polls,” the report noted, adding that regions with larger voter populations were allocated higher sample sizes to ensure proportional representation.
The findings suggest that the issue of LGBTQ+ rights could become a decisive factor in future electoral contests.
The report concludes that “LGBTQ+ will play an important role in who wins election 2028,” highlighting its growing influence in Ghana’s political discourse.
