87% of Ghanaians believe country is on the wrong track – Report

A latest democracy risk report by Afrobarometer has revealed a staggering 87% of Ghanaians, representing almost 9 in every 10 citizens, believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.

This alarming finding comes just 141 days to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The report also highlights a significant decline in democracy satisfaction among Africans, with Ghana experiencing a double-digit decline.

In 2011/2013, 74% of Ghanaians were satisfied with democracy, but this figure has plummeted to 51% in 2021/2023, indicating a 23 percentage point decline.

The report further reveals disparities between youth and elderly citizens regarding support for democracy. While youth expressed a greater willingness to tolerate military rule, the elderly remain committed to democratic principles.

In Ghana, the rejection of military rule has decreased significantly from 86% in 2011/2013 to 68% in 2021/2023, indicating a growing acceptance of military intervention.

The Afrobarometer report criticizes President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government for stifling the media, eroding institutional accountability, and perpetrating violence, resulting in eight fatalities during the 2020 presidential polls.
