GOIL has called for increased domestic refining of petroleum products, saying greater local production could reduce Ghana’s dependence on imports and help lower associated costs.
The call was made by Group CEO and Managing Director of GOIL PLC, Edward Abambire Bawa, when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy paid a working visit to the company as part of its oversight activities in the petroleum sector.
Bawa told the Committee that about 90% of GOIL’s petroleum products are sourced locally, while stressing the need to strengthen domestic refining capacity to further reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.
The engagement also focused on the affordability of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), the implementation of the Cylinder Recirculation Model, fuel supply and stock management.
GOIL also raised concerns about outstanding debts, the quality of imported bitumen and high port charges, particularly their impact on bunkering services.
The Committee’s visit was aimed at gaining a better understanding of the challenges facing operators in the petroleum sector while identifying opportunities to strengthen local capacity, improve efficiency and enhance consumer protection.
The discussions formed part of the Committee’s broader oversight responsibility to engage industry players and assess measures that could improve the resilience and performance of Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
