The Ghana Armed Forces has asked senior officers who supervised the recent recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium to step aside while investigations continue into the stampede that claimed six lives and left several others injured.
Military sources confirmed that new commanders have been appointed to take charge when the exercise resumes. The move, according to the sources, is intended to ensure transparency and protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
The tragedy occurred during a nationwide recruitment drive that drew thousands of hopeful applicants to the El Wak Stadium in Accra. Witnesses said overcrowding and confusion at entry points led to chaos as people tried to gain access to the venue.
The military has not released the names of the officers affected or provided a timeline for when the recruitment process will resume. However, officials say measures are being reviewed to prevent a repeat of the incident.
The Ghana Armed Forces has expressed condolences to the families of those who died and pledged full cooperation with investigators.
