A gatekeeper told my manager I won’t make it – Wendy Shay

Ghanaian singer Wendy Shay says a powerful industry gatekeeper once told her manager, Bullet, to his face that she would never make it in music.

Despite the early discouragement and intense pressure, she pushed forward to build a successful career.

She shared the story during a live chat with Kafui Dey, describing the harsh criticism and bullying she endured. The gatekeeper voiced his doubts directly in my presence, trying to derail me from the start.

Wendy Shay has said she felt heavily targeted, joking that “if I breathe, they go analyze the breathing,” underscoring her tough journey to silence her critics.

She also expressed gratitude to Bullet for standing by her and continuing to manage her, even after social media backlash went viral following the death of Ebony Reigns.

Signed to RuffTown Records by Bullet in January 2018, shortly after Ebony’s passing, she dropped her debut single “Uber Driver” on June 1, 2018.

Despite being labeled one of the most bullied artists in Ghanaian music, she channeled the negativity into motivation and rose to become a leading female artist.
