Abdul Karim Zito has resigned from his position as head coach of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club with immediate effect, bringing an end to weeks of speculation surrounding his future at the club.
The resignation was officially announced on Monday via the club’s social media platforms. In a statement, Asante Kotoko confirmed that management had accepted Zito’s decision, thanked him for his service, and wished him well in his future endeavours.
“Abdul Karim Zito Kabutey has resigned from his role as the head coach of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club with immediate effect. Management has accepted the resignation and expressed its appreciation to the coach for his services,” the club said, adding that details of the club’s new technical direction would be communicated in due course.
Zito’s decision follows Asante Kotoko’s elimination from the MTN FA Cup last weekend, a result that intensified pressure on the technical team and fuelled widespread calls for change.
Earlier on Monday, the club’s management had indicated that no final decision had been taken regarding the coach’s future, although they admitted they were “not fully satisfied” with the team’s performance and overall results this season.
By resigning, Zito effectively avoided a potential dismissal. Under the terms of his contract, the club would have been required to give him one month’s notice or pay a compensation amount of GHS 120,000 had he been sacked.
