Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has detailed a series of diplomatic dispatches and interventions initiated by the Ministry following the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student in Latvia.
In a social media post on Monday, December 22, Okudzeto Ablakwa said he met the family of the deceased at the Foreign Ministry, where he outlined steps taken so far, including the immediate deployment of a fact-finding mission from Ghana’s embassy in Germany.
“After directly conveying my deepest condolences, I briefed the family on interventions carried out by the Ministry,” Okudzeto Ablakwa wrote, noting that the embassy in Germany was tasked due to its concurrent accreditation to Latvia.
According to him, the dispatched team has already submitted a preliminary report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The fact-finding mission has presented a preliminary report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he stated.
Okudzeto Ablakwa further disclosed that Ghana has received official confirmation from Latvian authorities that investigations into the case are still ongoing.
He said there has been “confirmation by Latvian authorities that investigations into the circumstances leading to the death of Nana Agyei have not been concluded.”
As part of heightened diplomatic engagement, the Foreign Affairs Minister announced that he has formally notified the Latvian government of his intention to visit the country.
“My formal notification to the Latvian government of my decision to travel to Latvia to hold talks with my counterpart and engage investigators,” he said.
The Foreign Minister added that the planned delegation to Latvia will include representatives of the bereaved family, a move aimed at ensuring transparency in the process.
“That my imminent delegation to Latvia will include representatives of the family of Nana Agyei Ahyia,” he wrote.
He also revealed that the Government of Ghana intends to engage independent experts to review all investigative findings, particularly the final report expected from Latvian authorities.
“Government of Ghana will engage independent experts to analyze all investigative reports… to inform our next steps in the interest of justice,” Okudzeto Ablakwa stressed.
