Ablekuma North elections: EC dismisses call for rerun

The Electoral Commission (EC) has ruled out the possibility of a rerun in the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, citing that it would not be beneficial to the country’s democracy.

Deputy Chair of the EC, Eric Bossman Asare, emphasized that the commission is working to conclude the ongoing processes to declare a winner.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary election has been marred by controversy since the December 7, 2024, general elections. Initially, the EC declared Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the winner on December 10, 2024, defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh.

However, the declaration was later nullified due to the omission of results from 62 out of 281 polling stations.

Attempts to recollate results in January 2025 were met with challenges, including unauthenticated pink sheets and an invasion of the collation center by thugs, raising security concerns.

As of now, results from three polling stations remain outstanding, and the EC has petitioned the Ghana Police Service for intense security measures to facilitate the declaration of the results.

Appearing before Parliament on Thursday, June 19, Bossman Asare explained that the commission requires security protection to conclude and declare the winner.

He assured that the EC is committed to completing the process.

The EC’s position follows a question by Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, who sought to know why the commission has been unable to declare a winner despite the prolonged stalemate.
