Ablekuma North gets new ICT Lab for One Million Coders programme

A newly refurbished ICT laboratory has been commissioned at Odorkor Saleria 1 Basic School in Ablekuma North to support the government’s One Million Coders Programme and expand access to digital skills training for young people in the area.

The facility, renovated through the support of the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, will serve as a training centre for courses in Artificial Intelligence, coding and cybersecurity.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, Ms Aubynn said the project reflected a commitment to preparing young people for opportunities in the digital economy.

“Today is not simply about opening a building or computers. Today represents our collective commitment to the future of our children, the future of Ablekuma North, and the future of Ghana,” she said.

She urged students to make good use of the facility and develop skills that could shape their future careers.

“To our learners, this facility is for you. Use it wisely, learn, explore, create and dream big,” she added.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, attended the event as special guest of honour and inspected the laboratory to ensure the computers and online training systems were fully operational.

Mr George praised the initiative and said the One Million Coders Programme represented a major national investment in digital development.

“The beauty of technology is you can still be a student and start making money with IT,” he said. “Take the opportunity to get into AI and new technology because that is where the future is.”

He also announced plans to establish a second learning centre in Ablekuma North in response to growing demand for digital training in the constituency.

“I’ve looked at the size of Ablekuma North. It’s a big constituency. I can assure you that in the next phase, I will give a second learning centre for Ablekuma North,” he said.

The commissioning forms part of the wider rollout of the One Million Coders Programme across the country, following the distribution of digital equipment to regional ministers and Members of Parliament to support the programme’s first phase.
