The arrest of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sparked political controversy, with Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP’s Director of Communications, accusing the current administration of abusing state power to suppress dissent.
Abronye was arrested on Monday, September 8, 2025, by the Ghana Police Service following claims he made on a television show. He allegedly accused the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tetteh Yohuno, of attending meetings of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and labeled him as the “most corrupt” IGP in the country’s history.
He faces two charges: publishing false news and offensive conduct likely to disturb the peace, charges that have raised eyebrows within political circles. Abronye has denied the accusations and pleaded not guilty. His case was heard at the Accra Circuit Court, which has remanded him in police custody for a week to allow further investigations. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, September 19, 2025.
In an interview on Metro TV, Richard Ahiagbah condemned what he called a “classic show of power,” accusing the government of using state security forces to intimidate and control citizens. He argued that the state was being manipulated for political gain and that Abronye’s arrest was a clear example of how the current government has weaponized the police and the legal system.
Ahiagbah stated, “What is happening to Abronye is a classic show of power—weaponizing state security or the power to arrest to show a citizen where power lies. This is unacceptable. We need to tell the president clearly that this state does not belong to him.”
