Passengers travelling through Terminals 2 and 3 of the Accra International Airport will soon enjoy a faster and less cumbersome security screening process as the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) rolls out new screening equipment.
In a public notice, GACL announced that it is deploying “new, state-of-the-art security screening equipment” at passenger screening checkpoints in the two terminals to strengthen aviation security while making the screening process more convenient.
According to the company, the upgrade “is designed to enhance aviation security screening while improving the passenger experience.”
One of the biggest changes is that passengers will no longer be required to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their cabin baggage during security checks.
“Laptops and other large electronic devices can now remain in your cabin baggage during screening,” the notice stated.
The new system will also allow most passengers to keep their shoes and belts on while passing through security.
“Unless otherwise required during security profiling, passengers may proceed through screening with footwear and belts on,” GACL said.
The airport operator further announced that liquids, aerosols and gels can also remain inside passengers’ carry-on bags during screening, although existing restrictions on container sizes remain in force.
“Passengers can now keep Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGS) in their cabin baggage during screening as separate screening of LAGS may not be required,” the company explained.
However, it reminded travellers that “security regulations still prohibit LAGS that exceed 100ml in volume per container.”
GACL also said the installation includes a new Automatic Tray Return System, which is expected to speed up the movement of trays at security checkpoints and reduce waiting times.
“A new Automatic Tray Return System will quickly return trays to passengers for repacking of divested items,” the notice said.
The company indicated that the transition to the new screening technology will not happen all at once but will be introduced in phases alongside the existing equipment and procedures.
It has therefore appealed to passengers and other airport users for patience and cooperation during the transition period.
“Migration onto the new system will be done progressively or in phases and alongside the existing procedures and equipment,” GACL noted, adding that it “kindly requests the cooperation of all passengers and stakeholders as we commence operations with the new equipment in the coming days.”
