Achimota School Alumna urges students to explore global education opportunities

Returning to Give Back

An alumna of Achimota School, Lawyer Ruth Dordoe, has encouraged students of her former school to take bold steps in exploring higher education opportunities both locally and internationally.

Speaking during an engagement with final-year students, Lawyer Dordoe said she returned to Achimota to “give back” to the institution that nurtured her and to ensure that current students are better informed about the diverse educational paths available to them.

“When I was here, I didn’t have the chance to explore all the opportunities out there. I want the students to know that there are so many schools and programmes in Ghana and abroad that they can consider,” she said.
“The United States, for instance, offers a system that helps students become well-rounded and analytical thinkers. I want them to take advantage of legitimate student visa opportunities and scholarships to build themselves and their future so they can give back to Ghana.”

Guidance on Scholarships and Visa Processes

Lawyer Dordoe explained that her team is currently offering free consultations for students seeking guidance on school applications, F-1 visa processes, and scholarship opportunities.

“We assist students every step of the way so they don’t have to worry about making mistakes, and help them gain access to scholarships and other financial tools. Our aim is to help them go through the immigration process stress-free,” she said.

She also cautioned students to avoid visa scams and fake documentation, warning that such shortcuts can lead to severe consequences.

“Be truthful. Stay away from connection men. The U.S. immigration system has changed in many ways — paperwork and other supporting evidence can be easily verified. Always use the official U.S. website and submit legitimate documents,” she advised.

Achimota Leadership Praises the Initiative

The Assistant Headmaster (Academics) of Achimota School, Mr. Anthony Adjetey Adjei, commended the initiative, noting that it aligns with the school’s vision of producing globally competitive graduates.

“Many of our students travel abroad for further studies, so it’s important they understand the new immigration policies and academic requirements. Having Lawyer Ruth, a proud daughter of the land, speak to them is timely and relevant,” he said.

Mr. Adjei added that the school plans to make such engagements an annual event, alongside its existing university fairs.

“We already organize fairs for Ghanaian universities, but we are expanding to include international institutions. This ensures that our students are well-prepared to study both locally and globally,” he noted.

Preparing Future Leaders

The session, organized for final-year students, saw enthusiastic participation, with students taking notes and engaging actively with the guest speaker. The school also intends to host similar sessions for first-year students as part of efforts to prepare them for academic and personal development beyond the classroom.

“When our students go out to learn, we want them to see the opportunities available, return home, and contribute to Ghana’s development,” Mr. Adjei added.

A Legacy of Excellence

Achimota School continues to uphold its reputation as one of Ghana’s premier institutions, nurturing leaders who combine academic excellence with service to society.

“This is about giving back,” Lawyer Dordoe concluded. “When our students succeed, Ghana succeeds.”
