The Acrossfaiths Foundation has lauded Ghana for the largely peaceful conduct of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
While acknowledging isolated incidents of conflict and regrettable fatalities, the Foundation described the electoral process as a reflection of Ghana’s commitment to democracy.
In a statement signed by Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Bolabi Bortey, the President of the Foundation and retired Methodist Bishop of Accra, the organization highlighted the critical role of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in conceding defeat ahead of the official announcement of results. This, the statement noted, was an act of statesmanship that helped ease political tensions.
The Foundation also congratulated President-elect John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on their electoral victory. It expressed optimism for their leadership while extending wishes of better luck in future elections to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its candidate, Dr. Bawumia.
“Politics must never be conducted on religious grounds,” the Foundation emphasized, reaffirming its stance against divisive rhetoric. It urged political supporters to be mindful of celebrations in churches and mosques, recognizing these sacred spaces as inclusive venues that transcend partisan affiliations.
The statement concluded with gratitude to God for His blessings and a call for unity to sustain Ghana’s peace and development. “In all circumstances, we give praise to God Almighty for His mercies and glory. May His blessings sustain us forever and ever. Amen,” the statement added.
The Acrossfaiths Foundation is a leading interfaith organization in Ghana committed to promoting dialogue, tolerance, and unity among diverse religious and political groups. It remains steadfast in its mission to preserve harmony as a cornerstone of national progress.
The 2024 elections have been closely watched, with tensions high in some areas. However, observers and stakeholders, including civil society groups, have largely commended the process. The peaceful transition of power has bolstered Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
