The Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Efutu Constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has dedicated his birthday to raising awareness about Hepatitis B.
The move is to intensify the fight against the disease which the Efutu Municipality grapples with a surge in cases.

A campaign was launched in September 2023 to raise awareness and establish a program to screen and treat patients who test positive for the virus. Since then, 961 cases have been identified and placed on treatment, with some showing significant signs of improvement.

This year, 191 inmates and 300 staff at the Winneba local prisons, as well as 491 residents, were screened for Hepatitis B.
Afenyo-Markin also donated a television set, food, and drinks to the inmates.

Meanwhile, the Winneba prisons have appealed for the prisons’ accommodation challenge and other issues to be addressed, as the MP’s gesture is timely and prudent considering the overcrowded nature of the cells.
