Afenyo-Markin reports to police over alleged assault, investigation underway

The Ghana Police Service says it has commenced investigation into the alleged assault on a police officer by Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin during the ‘Save The Judiciary’ demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025.

Afenyo-Markin reported to the Police on Tuesday, May 7, 2025, to assist investigations after a request was made to the Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

“The Ghana Police Service continues its investigation into the case of an alleged assault against a police officer by Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin,” the police indicated in a statement.

Interestingly, the police have also commenced investigations into a petition received from Afenyo-Markin alleging that he was assaulted by the police officer concerned.

“Investigation has also commenced into a petition received from Hon. Afenyo-Markin alleging he was assaulted by the Police officer concerned,” the police noted.

Both investigations are ongoing, and the public will be updated as the case progresses.

The police assured the public that they will provide updates as more information becomes available.

The #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo was organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties to demand the reinstatement of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

However, Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin was captured in an altercation with a uniformed police officer during the Monday protest.

The Ghana Police Service said in a statement that it has “reviewed several video footages on an alleged assault on a Police officer by Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin during the just ended demonstration.”

Following this review, the police requested the Speaker of Parliament to release Afenyo-Markin to assist with the investigation.

“The officer in question will also be assisting the investigation,” the police added.
