The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Hon. Alexander Akwasi Acquah, broke down in tears during a live television interview as he passionately lamented the devastating impact of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, on Ghana’s water bodies and environment.
In a deeply emotional moment on Adwenekasa, a current affairs program on Accra-based Original TV hosted by Kwaku Owusu Adjei(Pato), the MP held back no words, openly accusing the John Mahama’s government of failing Ghanaians in the fight against illegal mining.
Alexander Akwasi Acquah stated that the Lands Minister is powerless to act because members of his own party are involved in illegal mining.
“Our water bodies are gone. Our people are drinking poison. What are we doing?” he cried. “The Lands Minister, Kofi Armah Buah, should stop crying and start working. We need action, not emotions.”
Hon. Acquah said he could no longer remain silent as communities in his constituency and across the country suffer from polluted rivers, destroyed farmlands, and health hazards stemming from unchecked galamsey operations.
He directly criticized the government, stating that: “We have deceived Ghanaians.” According to him, repeated promises to clamp down on illegal mining have not yielded results, and the lack of decisive leadership has emboldened perpetrators.
“Enough of the speeches. If the Lands Ministry cannot deliver, then let someone else who can lead the fight take over,” he charged.
