Akroso Chief urges EC to ensure transparency and peace in 2024 elections

The Chief of Akroso, Nana Kwabena Ofori II, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to exercise caution and transparency in their operations ahead of the 2024 elections.

Nana Ofori II, speaking when former President John Dramani Mahama paid him a visit as part of his Eastern Regional campaign tour, expressed his concern about the integrity of the electoral process, particularly in the wake of issues surrounding the 2020 general elections.

He emphasized the need for the EC to ensure that election results are declared with full transparency and corresponding figures.

“We do not want a repeat of what happened in 2020, where results were declared by the EC, only for them to return and change it three times,” the chief stated.

The chief further urged the EC to remain assertive in its role, maintaining fairness and clarity throughout the electoral process.

“We need to ensure that the results reflect the true will of the people, and that there is no confusion or manipulation of figures,” he said.

Additionally, Nana Ofori II highlighted the importance of maintaining peace during the election period, underscoring the serious consequences of civil unrest.

“The cost of civil unrest is unbearable. The Electoral Commission must ensure that peace prevails before, during, and after the elections,” he urged, stressing the need for calm and order as the country approaches the 2024 polls.
