Akufo-Addo Opens Nat’l Vaccine Institute

The National Vaccine Institute will be situated in a brand-new structure that was commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The country’s attempts to generate its own vaccinations are considered as having advanced with the commissioning of this structure.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized his government’s intention to make sure Ghana is never again a victim or a pawn of the global vaccination order in a speech he gave during the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.

He continued by saying that the vaccine nationalism displayed by the industrialized world during the COVID-19 epidemic served as a wake-up call for Ghana to take control of its own destiny.

President Akufo-Addo established the Vaccine Manufacturing Committee in February 2021 in response to this problem; it has now been renamed the National Vaccine Institute by an Act of Parliament. A grant of $25 million has been made to the Institute to help domestic pharmaceutical firms fill, complete, and package mRNA COVID-19, malaria, and tuberculosis vaccines.

A new governing board for the institute has also been established, with Dr. Anarfi Asamoa-Baah serving as its chairman. Other members include Prof. William Ampofo, Dr. Baffuor Awuah, Mustapha Tawiah Kumah, Dr. Daniel Gyingiri Achel, Ms. Frederica Sala Illiasu, Dr. Delese Darko, Prof. Alex Dodoo, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Kofi Nsiah-Poku, Prof. Kofi Opoku Nti, Prof. Gordon A. Awandare, and Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson.
