Akwadum family appeals for justice after losing GH₵200,000 in Gold scam robbery

A family in Akwadum in the Abuakwa South Municipality is calling for justice after armed men dressed as security officers stormed their home and robbed them of GH₵200,000 during what they believed was a genuine gold transaction.

Derick Boadu told reporters that the incident began on 19 April when he received a call from a man who introduced himself as Nana Yaw and claimed to be calling from Tarkwa with gold for sale. Derick paid GH₵1,000 to assist with transportation, and three men later arrived in the area. They spent the night at a guest house in Odumase due to travel challenges and contacted him around 4am to proceed with the deal.

Derick said he took the men to meet his father, Nana Boadu, at Akwadum Ankobeabene so they could verify the gold before paying. Not long after the meeting started, five armed men, some in military uniforms and one in a police uniform, burst into the house.

The family said the attackers held them at gunpoint and took GH₵200,000 in cash, mostly in GH₵200 notes, before escaping.

Nana Boadu recalled that the group was overpowered and left shaken as the robbers fled before they could alert anyone. The family reported the attack to the police, which led to the arrest of several suspects at Agyaenkotoku in Accra. The suspects were identified by the daughter of the victim, who said she had previously been sent by the robbers to buy acid. One suspect, known as Kamoko, reportedly mentioned two accomplices named Nana Yaw from Madina and Seidu from the Northern Region.

The suspects have been remanded twice, but the family says they are worried about reports that the case may be moved from Kibi to Accra.

They fear possible interference and are urging authorities to ensure a transparent investigation and a fair outcome.
