The Deputy Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abigail Yaa Mensah, has condemned comments made by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin about Presidency official Nana Yaa Jantuah, describing them as sexist, disrespectful and an affront to women in public leadership.
In a statement issued on Friday, Ms Mensah criticised the Minority Leader for referring to Ms Jantuah as “a nobody” and an “unmatched personality” after she received a petition on behalf of the Presidency.
She argued that the remarks went beyond a personal attack and instead undermined the contribution of women serving in leadership positions across the country.
According to Ms Mensah, suggesting that Ms Jantuah was not suitable to receive the petition because she is a woman reflects what she described as a belief in gender superiority and an attempt to exclude women from positions of authority.
She maintained that Nana Yaa Jantuah occupies a legitimate and respected role at the Presidency and should be judged on her responsibilities and competence rather than her gender.
The NDC official further claimed that the comments raise broader questions about how women are viewed within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying the incident should prompt reflection on the party’s commitment to gender equality and respect for women in leadership.
Ms Mensah called on the Minority Leader to issue what she described as an immediate and unreserved apology to Nana Yaa Jantuah and Ghanaian women.
She also urged the leadership of the NPP to publicly state its position on gender equality and distance itself from what she characterised as discriminatory and demeaning remarks.
Reaffirming her commitment to women’s participation in governance, Ms Mensah said the NDC Women’s Wing would continue to defend the dignity, respect and rightful place of women in public life.
