Businessman Alhaji Seidu Agongo has fulfilled a GH₵500,000 pledge to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, a donation aimed at supporting Ghanaians battling life-threatening kidney disease and struggling to afford dialysis treatment.
The donation, made on behalf of Alive Industries, fulfills a pledge Agongo made during the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, an initiative introduced under President John Dramani Mahama.
The contribution is a lifeline for many Ghanaians silently battling kidney failure, a disease that drains both bodies and bank accounts. With dialysis costing up to GH₵8,400 per month, most patients are left with no options but to suffer or perish.
“I see their faces every day. Mothers selling everything just for one more treatment. Fathers choosing between feeding their children or staying alive to raise them. These are the choices no Ghanaian should be forced to make.” Alhaji Agongo said
Agongo, who owns a dialysis center and previously founded the now-defunct Heritage Bank, has seen firsthand the devastating toll kidney disease takes, not just physically, but financially.
Speaking to a room filled with health officials and journalists, he emphasised the critical importance of access to affordable healthcare in a country where many cannot afford basic medical treatment.
“That’s nearly 20 times the minimum wage,” he said of the monthly cost of dialysis. “How can we expect our people to bear this?”
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, nicknamed “Mahama Cares” is designed to support the most vulnerable, the poor, elderly, unemployed, and those without family support.
Agongo’s donation is expected to provide much-needed relief to hundreds, possibly thousands, of Ghanaians in desperate need of dialysis and other lifesaving treatments.
The Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh praised the businessman’s gesture, calling it a shining example of patriotism and empathy.
“This is not just corporate social responsibility. It’s a Ghanaian standing for fellow Ghanaians. Alhaji Agongo shows us what true compassion looks like.”
Agongo, who also owns Agricult, a company focused on agricultural development—emphasized that his motivation stems from a deep belief in shared prosperity.
“My business only thrives in a healthy society,” he noted. “Healthcare shouldn’t be a privilege. It’s a right we must all fight for.”
He concluded by challenging fellow citizens to contribute in whatever ways they can.
“This is not about having much. It’s about caring deeply. Let’s be the reason someone gets another chance at life.”
Alhaji Agongo previous philanthropic efforts include the construction of a new block for the Child Emergency Unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
