All sectors deserve equal development attention – Majority Leader

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, says all sectors of the economy deserve equal development attention, and Parliament is committed to ensuring accountability through its Committee system.

Speaking during a media engagement in Parliament, Hon. Ayariga, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, explained that Parliament plays a critical role in holding the Executive accountable, primarily through the work of its various committees.

“For Parliament to effectively perform its oversight role, it is essential that every Committee submits reports on their work,” he said, highlighting the importance of regular monitoring and transparency in governance.

During the session, parliamentary leaders responded to several pressing questions from the media, including concerns about the attendance and availability of MPs in the chamber, the transparency of parliamentary work, proposals to cap the number of Supreme Court judges, constitutional amendments, and the submission of Bills and other government business.

Touching on climate change, Hon. Ayariga pointed to the recent appointment of Mr. Issifu Seidu as Minister of State in charge of Climate Change and Sustainability as evidence of government’s seriousness about the issue.

He noted that efforts are already underway to review and adapt international climate policies to fit Ghana’s context.

On her part, Deputy Minority Leader Hon. Patricia Appiagyei addressed concerns about the Minority’s recent push to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

She clarified that the move was not intended to stall government business but was aimed at protecting the principles of democracy.
