An Accra High Court has granted bail to Ama Governor and eight other protesters arrested during the Stop Galamsey Now demonstration.
The court, presided over by Her Loyship Justice Comfort Tasiame, set bail at GHC70,000 with two sureties, and the accused must report to the police once a week.
However, when the application for bail was moved, state prosecutors opposed it.
The Stop Galamsey Now protest aimed to raise awareness about the devastating environmental impact of illegal gold mining in Ghana.
The demonstrations led to clashes with law enforcement, resulting in the arrest of 53 protesters, including Ama Governor
The granting of bail comes as a relief to the protesters and their supporters, who claim the arrests were an attempt to silence dissenting voices seeking immediate action against galamsey.
