The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has announced that approved tolls and fees will continue to be collected throughout the Christmas and New Year holidays, including weekends, as it steps up sanitation and security operations across the city.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 23, the Assembly said it has activated 24-hour sanitation and security measures to ensure continuous waste evacuation, routine clean-ups and rapid response to sanitation issues during the festive period.
The operation will also provide enforcement support at markets, transport terminals, major corridors and other busy public spaces as commercial and social activities peak.
According to the AMA, the decision is aimed at matching the heightened movement and trading associated with the season with uninterrupted municipal services, particularly in sanitation delivery and public safety management.
The Assembly urged traders, transport operators, market users and other fee-paying members of the public to comply fully with existing regulations, stressing that approved tolls and fees remain lawful obligations that support city operations.
It cited the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (Operation of Commercial Vehicles) Bye-laws, 2017, which require commercial vehicles operating from approved stations to pay a daily toll for the use of loading stations. The AMA also referred to regulations on lorry park fees, explaining that drivers must pay the prescribed fee upon entering a lorry park each day to an Assembly-appointed officer, who is required to issue an official ticket.
The Assembly further referenced the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (Public Markets) Bye-laws, 2017, which establish tenancy arrangements for stalls and stores in public markets and require traders to receive and produce official proof of payment when requested.
Members of the public were encouraged to insist on official receipts or tickets for all payments and to report any unauthorised collections to the appropriate AMA offices. The Assembly said this was intended to strengthen accountability and protect residents and visitors from illegal or unofficial fee collection.
The AMA also appealed for cooperation with authorised officers and partner agencies throughout the festive season and urged the public to support city cleanliness by using approved waste disposal points and avoiding practices that could lead to choked drains and flooding.
