Amb. Sabah Zita Benson takes office as Ghana’s permanent representative to IMO

The High Commissioner of Ghana to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, Her Excellency Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson, has officially assumed her new role as Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The Ghana’s head of mission in the United Kingdom on Monday November 17, 2025, presented her credentials to the IMO Secretary General, Arsenio Antonio Domínguez Velasco, at the IMO Headquarters in London.

In her brief remarks, H.E Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson reiterated Ghana government’s dedication to strengthening maritime security, enhancing the capacity of maritime institutions, promoting decarbonization, and ensuring the safety and welfare of seafarers.

As one of Africa’s key maritime nations, Ghana’s strategic position on the Atlantic coast and its bustling ports, including the Port of Tema and Takoradi, place it at the heart of global trade and shipping. It is for this reason that H.E. Mrs. Zita Benson highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize maritime infrastructure, bolster the blue economy, and contribute to global maritime governance.

On his part, IMO Secretary General, Arsenio Antonio Domínguez Velasco expressed his appreciation for Ghana’s proactive role within the IMO and its continuous contributions to the organization’s objectives.

He also assured H.E. Mrs. Zita Benson of the IMO’s unwavering commitment to fostering collaboration with member states, including Ghana, to ensure that the maritime sector remains a catalyst for sustainable economic growth worldwide.

Zita Benson’s appointment as Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the IMO marks the beginning of a dynamic chapter in Ghana’s maritime diplomacy. Her leadership is expected to enhance Ghana’s influence within the international maritime community, advancing policies that protect the environment, ensure security, and foster innovation in the global shipping industry.
