Anti-gay Bill: Proponents petition Chief Justice to expedite hearing of related cases

A coalition of religious and traditional groups has petitioned Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to expedite the hearing of two cases related to the Pro-Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill

The petition, submitted on October 8, 2024, urges the Chief Justice to schedule hearings for the two cases within the next two weeks.

The groups, including the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, Advocates for Christ Ghana, and various Christian and Muslim organizations, expressed concern that the delay in hearing the cases may prevent the bill’s conclusion this year.

This would result in significant financial costs to stakeholders, including citizens and the state.

“As over ninety percent of Ghanaians want our religious, cultural, and social norms preserved, and our children protected from western neo-colonialist notions and LGBTQI practices, we petition you for urgent action,” the statement reads.

The petitioners referenced the Supreme Court’s assurance of an “early trial” and the Attorney General’s comments that one month is a “reasonable” time to dispense with outstanding cases, citing the need for expeditious action.
