Anti-LGBTQ Bill: We haven’t received required documents yet – Supreme Court Registrar

The Office of the Chief Justice has attributed the delay in hearing the anti-LGBTQ+ case to the parties involved yet to complete the required processes.

According to Justice Elen Ofei Ayeh, Registrar at the Supreme Court, the court will only proceed with the matter once the necessary documents are filed.

This development comes on the heels of a planned protest by proponents of the Bill, led by Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, scheduled for Tuesday, October 8.

The anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which has been a subject of controversy, seeks to further criminalize same-sex activities, with increased penalties and expanded definitions of prohibited acts.

Human rights groups have condemned the bill, citing its potential to exacerbate violence and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.

The bill was passed by Parliament in February 2024 and awaits President Nana Akufo-Addo’s signature. It expands the definition of prohibited acts to include the use of sex toys and imposes harsher penalties, including up to five years in prison.

Additionally, the bill targets allies of the LGBTQ+ community, including those providing support or advocacy.
