The Manwerehene of the Akwamu Traditional Area, Nana Dr. Emmanuel Adu-Sarkodee Afriyie, who doubles as the Chairman for the maiden Annual Public Lecture in honour of Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, has raised concern over what he describes as the abuse of religion in Ghana today.
Delivering his closing remarks at the event held in memory of the former Minister of Defence at Burma Hall on Tuesday August 4, 2026, Nana Dr. Emmanuel Adu-Sarkodee Afriyie said the country’s religious structure has become a major challenge due to lack of regulation and accountability.
“In Ghana today, religious structure has become a huge headache. Because anybody at all picks a Bible and starts polluting the minds of the youth and people swam to the person,” he said.
The traditional leader linked the issue to broader problems within Ghana’s social fabric. In his closing remarks, he urged the nation to “relook at our social structure,” noting that while attention is often placed on the economy, an “irresponsible built environment” continues to expose communities to natural disasters such as floods.
“We shall continue to suffer the natural disasters like flood. While we also correct the political and religious structure,” he added.
He also called for a national reassessment of Ghana’s social structure to address recurring natural disasters such as floods.
“We need to relook at our social structure. Many at times, we focus on the economic structure of the nation but if we have an irresponsible built environment, we shall continue to suffer the natural disasters like flood,” he stated.
