Apply for permit before blocking any road in Accra to avoid sanctions — AMA boss cautions event organiser

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has cautioned all event organisers, churches, corporate bodies, and social groups to formally apply for a permit from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) before blocking any road within the metropolis for their activities to avoid sanctions.

According to him, no individual or organisation has the authority to block a public road without clearance from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), explaining that such unauthorised actions worsen traffic congestion, disrupt emergency response routes, and endanger public safety.

Mayor Allotey issued the caution after the Metropolitan Security Council (METSEC) meeting on Tuesday, 18th November 2025, where security agencies and city authorities reviewed ongoing safety, traffic, and sanitation concerns across Accra ahead of the Christmas festivities.

He stressed that the Assembly would “strictly enforce road-use regulations to ensure order in the city,” henceforth adding that defaulters would face sanctions.

Mayor Allotey disclosed that the Assembly, in collaboration with the Fire Service and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), had initiated “Operation Disaster-Free Christmas”, a campaign to reduce fire outbreaks in both residential and commercial areas before, during and after the festive season.

Touching on measures to reduce crime, the Police disclosed that they had intensified day and night patrols across the metropolis to minimise crime before, during, and after the festive period stressing that additional visibility, rapid response measures, and targeted operations would be rolled out to deter criminal activity and ensure residents feel safe in the city.

The meeting, attended by police, fire service representatives, transport operators, and heads of key AMA departments, focused on the intensification of general police patrols, especially at night, to improve safety and deter criminal activity.

The Council also reviewed traffic management challenges, particularly within the Central Business District, highlighted persistent sanitation issues in the metropolis, where the Mayor emphasised that improving cleanliness remained an urgent priority under the Reset Accra Agenda.

Hon. Allotey reiterated that the Assembly remained committed to maintaining law and order, improving urban mobility, and ensuring a clean and safe environment for all residents and urged the public to cooperate with city authorities and adhere to established regulations.

He later called on institutions to “respect the city’s road-use laws, obtain the necessary permits, and work with the Assembly in the interest of public safety.”
