The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, has argued that appointing a new Commissioner alone will not be enough to address the country’s housing deficit challenges.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Home Owners Show on Saturday, May 16, 2026, Adjei-Mensah Korsah said Ghana’s existing legal framework governing housing and rent control remains weak and under-resourced, making it difficult for the commissioner to effectively carry out the mandate of the office.
“This will not do the trick because once the legal framework is not tight enough, it will be a problem for the commissioner to carry out his mandate,” he stated.
According to him, the Rent Control Department requires adequate resources, personnel and logistics to function efficiently and protect tenants from exploitation.
Mr Korsah further stressed the need for the department to establish offices across all 261 districts in the country to improve access for victims of rental manipulation and housing-related complaints.
“As it stands, the Rent Control Department does not have physical offices in the 261 districts of the country. The commissioner needs the requisite resources to function,” he said.
Touching on the high cost of hostel accommodation, the Techiman South MP assured that measures would be put in place to address the situation and absorb possible disparities in pricing.
