Arrest warrant for Mamprugu overlord revoked

The arrest warrant for Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Nayiri of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, and his kingmakers, has been annulled by the Bolgatanga High Court.

This follows the vandalism of the regional headquarters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) by some enraged teenagers from Mamprugu in Nalerigu in the North East Region for deriding and making fun of their traditions and custom.

On Saturday, 18 February 2023, the court issued the warrant for Alhaji Seidu Abagre (Kulga II), Naa Bohagu Mahami Abduali Sheriga, the newly-enskinned Paramount Chief of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, and his kingmakers.

The reason for the arrest was not given, although it was supposed to be related to the “illegal enskinment” of a new chief for Bawku on February 15 at the Mamprugu overlord’s palace.

The neighbourhood has been tense since the youth prevented soldiers from carrying out a court order to arrest their traditional leaders.

Meanwhile, the government urged security agents to arrest anyone claiming to be the Bawku Naba in addition to the properly gazetted Naba.

According to the government, the installation of a new Bawku Naba  is “illegal and a threat to national security.”

It was stated again that “Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II is the lawfully gazetted Bawku Naba and a member of the National and Upper East Regional House of Chiefs.”

The statement was published by the Ministry of Information and signed by Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
