Tensions are mounting at the Ashaiman Main Market in the Greater Accra Region as traders protest government plans to redevelop the congested facility into a modern 24-hour market. The traders argue that only renovation and improved utilities are needed to safeguard their livelihoods, warning that the proposed project could displace businesses and properties.
The protesters have appealed to their Member of Parliament, Hon. Ernest Norgbey, and former President John Dramani Mahama to intervene, demanding clarity on how the redevelopment will benefit them.
Market Queen Mother Leticia Ayaba said the unrest stems from inadequate consultation with traders, stressing that their voices must be heard before such a major transformation.
Meanwhile, Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Freeman Tsekpo has assured traders that they will be allocated space once the 24-hour economy market is completed.
