The Assemblies of God Church has committed to establishing one million new churches in areas without Christian congregations by 2033 as part of an ambitious global evangelisation drive.
General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, said the target forms part of the global church’s “MM33” mission, which is tied to the 2,000th anniversary of Christ’s ascension.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Friday, September 25, 2026, Rev. Wengam said the initiative is intended to accelerate the spread of the Christian gospel across the world.
“The MM33 simply means his mandate, our mandate,” he said.
“By the year 2033, the ascension of Christ will be 2,000 years. We are saying that by then, we should complete the evangelization of the world.”
He said the Assemblies of God has therefore set itself the target of opening one million churches in communities where there are currently no churches.
“As a result, Assemblies of God globally has committed to opening 1 million churches in areas where there are no churches,” Rev. Wengam said.
He explained that Ghana’s hosting of the World Assemblies of God Congress from October 14 to 16, 2026, will provide an opportunity for church leaders from around the world to strategise on achieving the target.
“This World Congress, we are going to strategize. We are going to remind ourselves of this mandate. They need to speed up global evangelization,” he said.
The congress, which is being held in Africa for the first time, is expected to bring together delegates from more than 100 countries.
Rev. Wengam said the morning sessions for pastors and church leaders will be held at Independence Square, while the evening open-air rally will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.
He also said the gathering is expected to generate economic activity as international visitors spend on accommodation and other services in Ghana.
“It’s going to open the economy of Ghana because people are coming to spend foreign currency. They have already booked hundreds of hotels,” he said.
