Asutifi North MP Restricted from Traveling Outside Accra, Released on GH¢150k Bail

NEIP CEO Eric Adjei Blasts NDC MP Over Attack On Anti-Galamsey Officers
Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has been barred from leaving the Greater Accra Region without notifying investigators as part of his bail conditions, following his alleged involvement in a violent galamsey (illegal mining) clash at Hwidiem.

Mr. Addo, who appeared before the court on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, was granted GH¢150,000 bail with strict conditions, including a requirement to report to investigators every two weeks until further notice or the commencement of trial.

He faces provisional charges of assault on a public officer, unlawful damage, and rioting with weapons. The court further cautioned him against any conduct that could obstruct or frustrate ongoing investigations.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Alex Odonkor, the case has assumed national significance and is now being handled by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters. The prosecution argued that the MP’s influence could potentially interfere with witnesses or evidence, citing videos circulating on social media allegedly showing scenes from the incident.

However, the defence team opposed the prosecution’s call for remand, insisting that the MP was entitled to the presumption of innocence under the Constitution. They told the court that Mr. Addo was a family man with a newborn child, has a permanent residence in Accra, and would fully cooperate with investigators.

The court subsequently granted bail under strict monitoring conditions and ordered the MP to reappear on December 1, 2025.
