As part of its efforts to improve the livelihoods of residents within its local communities, Atlantic Lithium Limited, has taken time to meet Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at an engagement on Friday, 27th September 2024, in Saltpond.
The engagement, led by the Atlantic Lithium Community Relations and Social Performance Manager, Dr Millicent Aning-Agyei, welcomed over 80 handicapped individuals within its impacted communities and the Mfantseman Municipality.
It focused on sharing information on the Ewoyaa Lithium Project with the PWDs, and better understanding the challenges of those living with disabilities and the opportunities for employment to enable greater integration into society.
Mr John Teteh, Chairperson of the Ghana Federation of Disabilities Organisations in Mfantseman, after the engagement, shared his expectations and called for mining firms to try to employ people living with disabilities because their only source of employment, working at toll booths, had been curtailed.
Generally, the PWDs appreciated the company’s initiative and requested frequent engagement to be more informed about the Project activities.
Madam Abena Serwaa, the Municipal Director of the Mfantseman Social Welfare and Community Development Department, thanked Atlantic Lithium for the initiative.
She also stated that, through direct or indirect employment opportunities from organisations, the hardships faced by those living with disabilities within the communities will be reduced.
Dr. Millicent Aning-Agyei, the Community Relations and Social Performance Manager at Atlantic Lithium, highlighted the need for the engagement session, stating that the perspectives, participation and contribution of vulnerable groups, including PWDs, are integral to the success of the Ewoyaa Lithium Project.
She assured the marginalised population that the company is committed to promoting inclusivity and diversity in its employment initiatives.
