Finance Minister, Dr Ato Cassiel Forson has directed security agencies overseeing the clean up of the Alajo storm drain to ensure that all refuse and debris are completely cleared from the area, warning against leaving waste along the banks of drains and gutters.
Dr Forson said the exercise must be completed by the end of the first day, with no refuse left on the shoulders of the storm drain after desilting.
He instructed the security agencies supervising the operation to ensure that all waste collected during the exercise is properly removed and disposed of, rather than being abandoned along the drainage channels.
His directive follows concerns that previous clean up exercises often ended with debris and silt left beside drains, only for the waste to be washed back into the waterways when heavy rains returned. According to the Finance Minister, that practice undermines the purpose of such exercises and must stop.
The clean up at Alajo is part of the government’s response to the devastating floods of 29th June.
It also supports President John Dramani Mahama’s appeal to Ghanaians to join efforts to restore affected communities and improve sanitation to reduce the risk of future flooding.
