Attacks on MoMo agents: MoMAG demands enhanced security measures

The Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MoMAG) has condemned the recent surge in armed robberies targeting mobile money agents, calling on the government to strengthen security presence and increase police patrols to protect its members.

In a statement issued on February 14, 2025, MoMAG President, Mr. Stephen Quarcoo Gorman, expressed concern over the alarming rate of attacks on mobile money agents, citing the recent robbery at Kasoa, where an agent was robbed of GHc 30,000 at gunpoint, and the tragic shooting of an agent on February 13, 2025.

“These incidents are alarming and unacceptable,” Mr. Gorman said, urging the Minister of Interior and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to take immediate action to protect mobile money agents.

To safeguard their lives and properties, MoMAG advised mobile money agents to exercise extreme caution by:

– Maintaining confidentiality: Avoid informing customers or strangers about banking schedules or transactions.

– Being discreet on phone calls: Refrain from discussing sensitive information, like withdrawals or deposits, in public or over the phone.

– Protecting information: Be cautious about sharing personal or business details with others.

– Securing funds: Avoid displaying or carrying large amounts of cash; consider hiding some funds for safety.

MoMAG also urged the authorities to:

– Increase police presence and patrols in areas prone to robbery.

– Provide training and resources to support mobile money agents in securing their businesses.

– Collaborate with telecom companies and financial institutions to enhance security measures.

The group extended its condolences to the bereaved family of the agent who was tragically shot .
