Ayawaso East Decides: NPP, NDC face off in crucial poll

Voters in Ayawaso East head to the polls today to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of the constituency’s MP, Naser Toure Mahama.

The Electoral Commission fixed Tuesday, March 3, 2026, for the by-election and says it is fully prepared to conduct the exercise. Fred Tetteh, the Commission’s Director of Research, confirmed that all logistics and personnel arrangements have been completed.

Election materials, including ballot boxes and voting screens, have been distributed to the 113 polling stations across the constituency. Nearly 50,000 voters are expected to participate, with the official register listing 49,966 eligible voters. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.

The contest has largely narrowed to the two main political parties. The New Patriotic Party’s candidate, Baba Ali, says he is confident of pulling off a win. On the other side, the National Democratic Congress’ Baba Jamal believes victory will be his by the end of the day.

An opinion poll by the research firm Global InfoAnalytics suggests the NDC may have the edge. The survey, conducted between February 28 and March 1 among 972 voters in the constituency, projects Baba Jamal securing 75 percent of the vote. Baba Ali is forecast to receive 21 percent.

Independent candidate Umaru Sanda Muhammed, who recently left the NDC, is projected to secure about 3 percent of the vote. Other contenders, Ibrahim Iddrisu and David, are each expected to attract less than one percent, indicating a race dominated by the NPP and NDC.

As voting gets underway, attention turns to whether the poll predictions will hold or whether voters will deliver a different verdict at the ballot box.
