Ayawaso Wuogon Widows Association condemns Dumelo over ‘bloody widow’ allegation

The Widows Association in the Greater Accra Region’s Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency has strongly denounced recent accusations made against Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the area’s current member of parliament and minister of sanitation and water resources, by John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate.

Mr. Dumelo accused Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan of being the cause of her late husband’s death on a TV3 public broadcast.

According to the Widows Association, Mr. Dumelo’s remarks were deplorable, baseless, and hurtful to all widows and women in the country as well as to Madam Alhassan.

In a statement dated August 29, 2024, the association claimed that these comments belittle widows, who already deal with a great deal of social and emotional hardship following the death of their spouses.

Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan received recognition from the Association for her exceptional fortitude in bouncing back from a personal tragedy and continuing to serve as a committed public servant.

They emphasized her outstanding leadership in the legislature, her position as the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic’s Deputy Majority Chief Whip, and her services to the people and the country.

‘’As a widow, Madam Alhassan has become a symbol of empowerment, demonstrating that women can rise to positions of influence and serve their communities with integrity and commitment despite adversity’ the statement said.

“Our cultural values as Ghanaians are rooted in respect, empathy, and compassion—especially towards widows, who deserve our support and understanding,” the Association said in their statement.

“Mr. Dumelo’s statements are a betrayal of these values and a stark departure from the decency and respect that should characterize our public discourse.”
